Being part of the London Funders movement means building strong, trusted connections based on shared values and ambitions. The Member Spotlight series is an opportunity for members to share about their work, values and expertise, and provides fellow funders an opportunity to connect with them. This month, we're spotlighting: the Henry Smith Foundation.
Our new strategy launched in June 2025, focuses on supporting people through three key life transitions:
These transitions are moments when the right support can prevent harm and unlock opportunity, shaping whether someone feels safe, connected and able to move forward, or faces greater risk and fewer choices.
In each funding priority, we run grant funds with clear aims and criteria. This summer, we launched three new funds; Together We Begin, Shout! And the Domestic Abuse Fund - one in each key priority area.
We’re excited about the quality of the applications we’re receiving so far and will be launching more funds in 2026.
We are currently working on a strategy that looks at how we can bring our volunteers, as well as other funders, grant holders and partners together to share best practice, learnings and share resources across the sector. It’s in its early stages – but we’re excited to see how we can add value to the sector beyond funding.
During our recent rebrand and strategy launch, we learned that it’s ok to question the way we’ve historically operated and learn together as we develop our work. Reaching out to other funders and those operating outside our sector for their perspectives has been invaluable in this. Our advice? Don’t be afraid to lean on your networks, collaborate and share learning – getting it wrong and learning from doing is all part of the process. Doing this has ensured that we can uphold our values of being Forward-thinking, Catalysts for Change, Relationship-centred - and Always learning.
Being part of a network that champions collaboration is invaluable. As funders, we can pool our knowledge across sectors to increase impact where it matters most.
We’re interested in how we as funders can bring people together, and how we can do this more intentionally to increase impact and facilitate learning.
There’s potential in creating spaces that go beyond funding relationships: information exchange for learning, fostering deeper collaboration, shared problem-solving, and collective action. This includes thinking about how we bring in and centre voices from funded organisations and communities with lived experiences of the issues we work to address. Strengthening this area could help us tackle emerging issues faster, share intelligence effectively, and build a more resilient funding ecosystem.
We’d love to discuss how funders are approaching communications and narrative change, especially in relation to public perceptions of poverty, migration, and racial justice. How can we align our messaging and amplify the voices of those with lived experience, while also navigating the increasingly polarised media and political landscape? Sharing strategies and lessons learned could help us all be more effective in shaping public discourse.
