Demand for Equity & Justice Infrastructure

Earlier this year, we embarked on a project to map the current state of funding for equity and justice infrastructure. While some efforts have been made to better evidence the scale and funding of more generic forms of infrastructure support, we still lack understanding about the infrastructure sector specifically for equity and justice organisations. This project will improve our understanding of the current funding position of the sector and the needs they are seeking to address.

Rising demand: getting beneath the headlines

Over recent weeks we’re hearing more and more about increased demand on open grant rounds. High demand on funds isn’t new, but it seems that the number of applications to many grant programmes has reached new heights. If funding applications have sharply increased, it is crucial that we understand the underlying reasons behind this change.

Reflections from the Big Network Day: How can we come together to create meaningful change?

Last week, London Funders' members came together for our Big Network Day – a half day event where our thematic, member-led networks had the opportunity to connect, share learning and together explore one key question: How can we come together to create meaningful change in London? Chaired by London Funders’ members, the Networks are a space for funders working on specific areas to meet on a regular basis to exchange knowledge and ideas, troubleshoot challenges, and identify opportunities to collaborate. The Big Network Day was a chance for all of the networks to come together – for the first time since 2020 – to build stronger connections and foster collaboration between the Networks. Here are some of the key learning points we took away from the day.

Q&A with Collaborate: learning, measuring and defining systems change

What key ingredients do you need to create systemic change? How do you develop a common understanding of what it means to change a particular system? How do you measure the success of the work? Do you need to? As part of our learning programme on systemic change, we spoke with Naomi Diamond and Leigh Brown from Collaborate CIC about all of these questions and more, based primarily on their experience of being a learning partner for the Cornerstone Fund (a collaboration between London Funders’ members City Bridge Foundation, the National Lottery Community Fund, Trust for London, John Lyon’s Charity and the Greater London Authority). The Cornerstone Fund builds and progresses the ambitions of the ‘Way Ahead’, a joint initiative by civil society, public sector bodies and funders, coordinated by London Funders back in 2016. The Way Ahead initiative set out a vision for a thriving civil society that is resilient, collaborative, and sustainable and which will improve outcomes for Londoners. Eight years on from the publication of the Way Ahead recommendations, there is much to learn from how Cornerstone Fund partners have ambitions of systemic change into practice. With their role as a learning partner to the Fund coming to an end, Naomi and Leigh reflected on the learning that’s emerged.

Q&A with Jonathas Azevedo: funders as partners of change

What’s it like working as a network of funders trying to create change? Where do funders sit in a wider ecosystem of movements and civil society groups working towards fundamental reform? Continuing on with our learning focus on systemic change, we spoke with Jonathas Azevedo, Programs Advisor at the Brazilian-based Comuá Network, a group of funders working in the fields of socio-environmental justice, human rights and community development. Jonathas shared his learning about what it means to put communities in the driving seat, funders being partners rather than gatekeepers for change and more. Many of the themes we discussed with Jonathas resonated with our own work and that of our members here in the UK – engaging and learning with colleagues across the world help shape our own thinking as we look to how collectively tackle some of the challenges we need to face together, from the climate crisis to poverty and injustices facing London’s communities.

Q&A with Leah Black: creating a long-term fund for change

Last month, we kicked off our latest learning question on systemic change, spurred on by the conversations from this year’s Festival of Learning which called for more radical solutions to the entrenched problems facing our communities. As part of this, we’re bringing learning together from friends and members to deepen our understanding of what it takes to fund and work in ways that truly drive systemic change. We recently spoke with Leah Black who leads the development of a new, ten-year fund in Edinburgh, Regenerative Futures Fund, about the lessons from working collaboratively to develop a vision and a fund that helps tackle poverty, the climate emergency and racial injustice in the city.

What does it take to create systemic change?

Just over a month ago, we wrapped up our annual Festival of Learning, a two-week programme of learning where funders, civil society and changemakers shared a phenomenal depth and breadth of insights. One of the big highlights this year was the appetite from funders to support and drive real change for London’s communities. There is a sense that ‘tinkering’ around the edges is no longer a sufficient response to the deeply entrenched problems funders hope to play a role in tackling.
