About the role
This is a really exciting time to be leading the development and delivery of the Mayor’s work in civil society and sport to support young Londoners. Our capital is a fantastic city, but not everyone has access to its opportunities. A whole range of challenges exist for some young people, keeping them from activity that can help them develop important skills, have a voice, receive support, build positive relationships and feel a sense of belonging.
Your contribution will be instrumental in extending, embedding and championing the impact of volunteering and sport on the mental health, personal development and employability of those young Londoners most in need of support. As such you will be key in shaping the unit’s wider work to meet the Mayor’s commitments as well as the aims of the London Recovery Programme (you can find out more here https://www.london.gov.uk/sites/default/files/recovery_programme_overview.pdf).
You can also find out more about some of our existing programmes here: https://www.london.gov.uk/what-we-do/sports/sport-unites
You will be great at establishing and maintaining close working relationships with senior decision-makers, including funders, businesses, local and central government and civil society and community sport leaders, to ensure successful implementation of strategies and programmes relating to sport and youth social action.
You’ll also have a proven track record of complex programme management, as well as being a strong team leader able to ensure that colleagues’ work aligns with organisational objectives and makes a measurable impact for Londoners. With significant budget responsibility, as a member of the senior management team you will contribute to the unit’s overall development, including our anti-racism and wider equity and wellbeing initiatives.
We encourage applications from people from a range of backgrounds and want to understand how your experience and skills are relevant to this work. So please tell us, with some specific examples, how you would demonstrate:
- An excellent awareness (if not direct experience) of senior-level policy and practice relating to community sport, youth social action and / or youth-focused volunteering.
- An understanding of the real experiences and challenges facing young people in London’s communities – especially those confronting inequalities of access and opportunity.
- A track record of meaningful and effective partnership working at a senior level, with a range of different stakeholders, to support programme and policy development.
- An ability to bring problem-solving, ambition and innovation to your every day at work.
- How you balance strategic thinking with attention to detail in co-ordinating work across different programmes, with differing priorities and agendas.
- Good awareness of key relevant policy areas, as well as budgetary and governance requirements, and monitoring and evaluation processes to measure impact.
- Effective line management skills in leading, motivating and managing a team.
- Clear and convincing communication, so others see you, and our work, as credible and engage with us.
This role will be based at London Fire Brigade’s Head Office (Union Street SE1 0LL). At present GLA staff are working largely from home, with office space available. We will be moving to hybrid working as part of this, you will need to split your time between home working and coming into the office with a minimum of 2-3 days a week being office based.
