About the role
Barking & Dagenham Giving (BD Giving), an independent grant-making charity, is looking for a new Programme & Engagement Coordinator to support groups of local people in learning shared decision-making, conflict management, and communication. We are a small and highly passionate team with the ambition to revolutionise the way funding works. Our work is about shifting decision-making power into the hands of people who are disadvantaged and disenfranchised. We believe people should be involved in decisions that impact their lives and given the opportunity to create meaningful change for themselves, their family, and their neighbourhood.
We are looking for someone who has a sense of optimism, curiosity and can take the initiative, working with people to meet their needs and aspirations. We want to see a world where communities are empowered to identify and prioritise the issues that matter most to them and have the agency to channel resources towards meaningful change. BD Giving also advocates for co-design and participation to be more widely used methods of working with communities. We’re actively leading this movement within our borough’s social sector, among funders in London, and national charities. Over the past five years we have facilitated over £1 million in grant distribution and social investments and piloted an innovative £1.5m community-led investment fund through radical participatory approaches that have inspired other London boroughs, trusts and foundations.
You will work with the programmes team and wider organisation to support people to make decisions that affect their lives by creating spaces where they can explore new ways of working together, and by equipping them with the skills and knowledge they need to inform decision-making. This includes supporting innovative participatory programmes and through delivery and administrative support. You will help strengthen the team’s understanding of how to best support disadvantaged and disenfranchised people in the borough, from first contact through to their continued engagement as alumni of our programmes. You will be responsible for monitoring progress of our programmes and reporting on the outputs and impact. We have a permanent office space in central Barking and regularly deliver work across the borough. Due to the nature of community work, some evenings and weekends are required but you will have plenty of notice.
