About the role
John Lyon’s Charity (“the Charity”) gives grants to benefit children and young people (CYP) up to the age of 25 who live in nine boroughs in North and West London: Barnet, Brent, Camden, Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham, Harrow, Kensington & Chelsea and the Cities of London and Westminster. The Charity’s mission is to promote the life-chances of CYP through education.
Covid-19 and the subsequent cost-of-living crisis have had a devastating impact upon the CYP sector in the Charity’s Beneficial Area (BA). This has exacerbated the difficulties the sector was already facing following the multiple funding cuts experienced over the past decade and a half, threatening to sweep away even the strongest of organisations. In response, in 2021 £22 million was ringfenced from the Charity’s endowment to be spent over the following six years through the Home - School – Community (HSC) programme. The funding is given out through five different funds – the Recovery Fund, Replication Fund, Collaboration Fund, Cultural Capital Fund, and Young People’s Foundations (YPF) Small Grants Fund. This funding is in addition to the Charity’s ongoing annual grant giving of over £15 million per annum.
Our mission is to help those charities that are already recognised as being essential to the health and diversity of the voluntary sector within the BA and who make a very real difference to the lives of young people. The HSC programme seeks to ensure that as many viable organisations as possible both survive and thrive, providing the vital services needed in the local community. The initiative seeks to demonstrate how each vertex of the funding triangle (Home-School-Community) is as important as another when it comes to impact on children and young people’s future life opportunities.
