The latest data from Shelter shows that London remains the epicentre of the homelessness crisis with as many as 1 in 58 Londoners are experiencing homelessness. 45% of people sleeping rough – one of the most visible forms of homelessness - are in London. Data from the 2021 Census also shows that almost one third of lived-in London homes are now privately rented, which is having a significant knock-on effect on poverty levels, with 3 in 10 renters facing poverty.
Long-term investment in affordable housing is needed and many have called on the Government to act now, before the problem gets worse. But given the scale of the challenge, what can funders – from independent foundations and local authorities to housing associations - do to help tackle the housing crisis in the capital?
For our March insight meeting, happening on the 29th March, we’ll be joined by Jon Tabbush, Senior Researcher at the Centre for London, Sophie Boobis, Head of Policy at Homeless Link and Phil Kerry, Chief Executive of New Horizon Youth Centre to discuss the housing crisis further.
