Update for funders on asylum and migration issues in London

Report of our meeting in partnership with the GLA

English language provision for migrants was the main focus of a joint meeting for funders organised by the GLA and London Funders in March. Discussion teased out the core of good provision and found it most effective when it is community-based and approaches language learning in the whole context of a migrant’s family and community life as well as relevant to employability. We also had some expert guidance on the data relating to migrants in the 2011 Census.

A copy of a report published by the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education and commissioned by the Greater London Authority (2012), can be viewed here.  It offers three models for supporting “pre-employment” learning of English and case studies of innovative provision in London.
