Camden Giving

Why Camden?

The London Borough of Camden is an exciting place, it is home to some of the World’s most prestigious cultural institutions, a diverse and successful business community, a rich creative heritage and a knowledgeable voluntary sector.

Despite this many Camden residents feel isolated or are living in poverty. Camden Giving has been established to create a fairer future for the people of Camden, many of which feel shut out from society. The Camden Giving dream is to build a brighter future for everyone by joining together businesses, the voluntary sector, residents and the public sector. This approach is at the heart of everything we do and is instrumental in every stage of our work.

Camden Giving has a Steering Group made up of representatives from residents, businesses, the voluntary sector and Camden Council. Voluntary Action Camden have been involved from the very beginning and currently administer our grants.

Working with communities effected by change

We launched in April 2017 and since then we have given 9 grants totalling £77k to support the communities directly affected by the Kings Cross Development. The projects we have supported are varied, but all share our vision of a collaborative and fair Camden. We will continue to give grants to communities affected by this development work.

Unemployment

Unemployment is a key focus for Camden Giving. There are higher than average number of job seekers within the borough and within the most deprived wards in Camden the number is double the national average. Despite this 91% of jobs in Camden go to people outside the borough. The causes of this are complex, which is why we are working with businesses, the voluntary sector and residents to identify ways that Camden Giving can give people access to meaningful careers.

Isolation

Despite being a busy inner London borough, Camden is the loneliest place in the country for older people, with more phone calls to Sliver Line than anywhere else. Isolation effects whole communities, not just older people, a problem that is being amplified by rapid changes in the borough. Camden Giving is talking to businesses, the voluntary sector and residents to ensure that everyone in Camden feels connected to the community.
