Jahanara Rajkoomar

Jahanara is the Director of Community Investment at MTVH. Making a difference to people who are socially disadvantaged or excluded is her primary motivator and has defined her career to date. She has over 20 years’ experience in social welfare work having started this journey at the Citizens Advice Service whilst studying Law. This influenced her career direction to focus on addressing social exclusion on an individual and community basis. This still remains a huge passion; trying to make a difference to people in a way that is meaningful to them. She brought this commitment into the housing sector over 10 years in a variety of roles and has used her experience and knowledge to influence how housing can play a role in enabling customers to be better tenants and take control of their lives.

In response to the changes taking place at the macro level in the socio-economic environment over the last 20 years, Jahanara has become a more commercially aware leader who is able develop creative responses to organisational challenges that demonstrably deliver value for money. This is evidenced by key pieces of research and innovative service pilots that have influenced other housing associations to adopt similar approaches.

As a London Funders Trustee, she is keen to learn from others in terms of best practice services, leadership and fundamentally inspire colleagues across the sector to encourage more coordinated action to address the social issues and inequalities that limit people’s ability to live to their full potential and aspirations. Jahanara is keen to influence how HAs proactively deliver their social purpose through core and non-core services.  She is an advocate of ensuring that we as a sector meaningfully engage and listen to our residents’ voices in the things that matter to them.
