Responding to recession: an innovation & good practice guide, London Councils, August 2009
As boroughs increasingly work with and across different sectors, the evidence for what works is being shared more and more. For example, councils’ policy officers’ network, supported by Capital Ambition, is a forum for senior policy practitioners to share knowledge and deepen understanding of the effects of recession and the effectiveness of policy responses.
The network has produced a booklet: Responding to recession, to share examples of current activities more widely and provide inspiration for others especially in showing how valuable local action can be, even in tackling a recession that was global in origin.

Third sector ten point plan: London Borough of Sutton, March 2009
In March this year the London Borough of Sutton confirmed a ten point plan of commitments to shape its relationship with the third sector. Summarised in a single page, this plan covers diverse areas – eg from a broad commitment to consultation and partnership to the specifics of paying grants in advance twice a year, not in arrears. The borough’s own community fund has expanded in size and other local funders encouraged to give more to the borough’s VCS also. Some of the points relate to aspects of capacity-building and performance improvement for the sector including support in developing the skills for tendering, building social enterprises and improving sustainability.
